Our Rector

The Rev. Jay O'Rear

The Rev. Jay O’Rear (“Rev. Jay”) is a Northern California native who spent 20+ years as a communications professional in Silicon Valley before answering the call to the Episcopal priesthood.

Jay earned his Master of Divinity at Union Theological Seminary in New York City and holds a Master of Arts in English from the University of Texas at Austin, as well as a Bachelor of Arts in English from San Jose State University. Before accepting the call to serve as our Rector, he served churches in New York City and Northeast Pennsylvania.

While a part of the Diocese of Bethlehem, he participated in the diocesan racial justice committee and regularly visited county correctional facilities. He has long-standing interests in prison ministry, adult formation, and small-group ministry.

Rev. Jay believes social justice efforts are most sustainable when rooted in contemplation; he hopes to integrate contemplative practices into his ministry at St. John’s whenever possible.

In his spare time, he loves hiking; camping; reading and watching science-fiction and fantasy; and scouting out good BBQ. He lives in Aptos with his wife Robin.
